Not counting the logo and design pieces, Mario makes his proper Club Nintendo cover debut with the release of Super Mario Bros. 2. In celebration of this new Mario adventure, this issue also featured maps to a select few levels in the first two worlds of the original SMB. So if you were a Mario fan at the time, you were pretty much catered for, no matter whether you were playing the previous game or the new one.

For non-Mario fans, there was always the likes of Castlevania and Gradius to play. The former game's horror-themed castle stages provided players with a stiff challenge in their quest to vanquish Dracula, while Gradius would bring the classic shoot-em-up arcade game to the NES for some interstellar blasting action. Both would go on to spawn numerous sequels and spin-offs for years to come.
