Club Nintendo's very first cover game was not Mario or Zelda, as one may have expected, but Top Gun! The blockbuster film's world of high stakes dogfights was easily translated to the game world as an arcade-style flight-sim/shooter. However, not only did players have to overcome the waves of enemy fighters sent their way, but also successfully land their plane onto the waiting aircraft carrier at the end of each mission!
Issue 1 mainly served as an 'introduction' magazine, with features on the NES itself, along with a focus on the major games on the system, such as Super Mario Bros., The Legend of Zelda, and Metroid. However, it did lay down the foundations for the magazine's layout in the following years. And so, Club Nintendo begins...
