Vol. 1 Issue 5

Volume 1 - Issue 5

Club Nintendo's first Christmas issue, and Santa Mario has a treat for readers: a glimpse of the one of the most infamously bad NES boxarts in history! Mega Man introduced players to the eponymous robot as he sought to prevent Dr. Wily's plans for world domination, and defeat the six 'robot masters' on the way. The Mega Man series would go on to become one of Capcom's longest-running and most beloved franchises. Oh, and the UK release for the first game eventually used a different boxart image featuring a slightly more accurately-depicted hero.

Another soon-to-be long-running franchise featured in this issue was Metal Gear, the first of Konami's popular stealth series. Although the NES port differed in many ways from the MSX2 original, it still provided players with a compelling adventure in which the main aim was not to be spotted by the enemy soldiers. It was also infamous for some rather dodgy translations, with phrases such as "The truck have started to move!" and "I feel asleep!" becoming cult favourites among fans.
